The Tall Uni

I was told by Rob Brown (a talented local unicyclist) that before you try a tall unicycle that you should be able to idle (rock back and forth on the unicycle) so that you can maneuver yourself out of trouble instead of falling on top of someone. So once Caleb was able to idle reliably (see previous entry) we got him a 5′ tall unicycle. This is a video of him on it after practicing for a day or two.

It turns out that riding the tall uni is actually easier in terms of balance – just like the difference between balancing a pen versus a broomstick. You have more time to correct any errors in balance. Of course, it is much harder to mount the tall unicycle (Caleb climbs up while I hold it for him) and it is A LOT scarier than a standard uni. Caleb makes it look easy.

After falling off my unicycle and seriously spraining my wrist I have required Caleb to use wrist guards whenever he is riding the tall unicycle. The helmet was always a requirement.
